Why food safety is important

The Food Act 2014 requires that food business train their staff.
Obviously knowing what is required to make and keep food safe and suitable is a big factor for any food business.
It is one of the top food safety factors that any business operating under a Food Control Plan or National Programme must achieve.

As part of the food service education campaign, NZFS has launched The 'Trust Test' video.
It is based on the insights that food safety matters more to customers than business owners may realise.
The message being that ‘Trust makes everything taste better’.
In the video, NZFS invited a group of people to lunch, served them a free burger, and got them to take the 'Trust Test'.

Knowing how food is made and kept safe and suitable only goes part of the way.
Unless you take action on the knowledge you have gained the training will have no value.
This is such an important matter that I cannot stress enough
You must "Walk The Talk" .....
or as NZ Food Safety says .......
"Know it and Do it"!
Should you 'Trust' me, (Bob Askew)?

I have been involved, as a food hygiene and food safety officer since 1967.
Oh my goodness - that's nearly 60 years!
So this is a very brief introduction about me and my purpose and capabilities in providing these essential food safety & hygiene courses.
If you want to ask me anything about me or my training please don't hesitate to ask.

In 1994 I returned from an overseas mission with Red Cross and I developed the concept of providing effective affordable training for anyone involved in producing or selling food.
The concept was entered into the prestigious SOLGM/NRB Customer Service Award in 1996. It got first place!
Now after several iterations it is available here as my "Original Programme"

In my first years providing food safety training I asked Sir Patrick Goodman who was then CEO of Goodman, Fielder, Wattie to evaluate what I had done
He told me it was excellent except for one thing...."It is too cheap"
Although he gave wise advice I have stuck to my principle on the price issue despite my wife's and my accountant's protestations.
Sir Patrick insisted on paying the enrolment fee even though his time and wisdom was worth far, far more. Such a legend!
Feedback
Here is just a small sample of some of my feedback responses.
Finally, just completed your awesome training in the above this morning.
I thought I should have flown thru by using the knowledge from a “previous life” (seafood processing). Well not quite! Learnt many new things and reminded of stuff I had forgotten but didn’t know I had!
I really enjoyed the training partly because it was easy to pick-up and put-down when time was a factor.

“Thank you for the certificate of achievement, this is going to hold value when I do hope to start a business of my own at some point.”
“As part of my feedback, I would like to say that the service from your end was very prompt and professional and therefore it was not a frustrating experience.”
“I thought the study content was easy to understand (coming from a person who’s first language isn’t English) and all-in-all an easy experience.”

“Well thought out and designed course, would suit almost any food handler in any capacity but good to have the specific areas of food borne illnesses broken down and explained to a greater degree. Bob makes somewhat difficult to understand procedures easy to understand! His experiences often tell the whole story from start to finish. Nice to be able to learn from someone who has already experienced almost any issue we may face in the future. Highly recommend.”
Rebecca
I think they are perfect! Really makes you think! Especially around the safe/suitable questions.
These are going to be great for our staff.
We do run the safe and suitable FCP so we will run a staff meeting and then sign everyone up.
Many thanks Bob
Alicia
‘Thank you Bob – you are a star, I’ve already had requests from a couple of businesses for a new diary and then saw your email link – perfect.
That’s probably another beer I owe you”
Sue
“I’ve just finished the course — it was really good and super easy to follow.
Appreciate all the work you’ve put into making it so helpful :)”
Lara
“Thank you very much. We will surely acknowledge the reference.”
